As a teacher of Classical Greek and Roman Mythology I was looking forward to “Troy.” In the past I have put together a unit on the Trojan War that included not only Homer’s epic poem the “Iliad,” but also the plays of Euripides and Aeschylus and other ancient works on the stories of these characters. In other words I am familiar with this story to the extent that when Briseis showed up wearing a garment with long sleeves I was upset that we did not get to see the lovely arms that were part of her usual epithet. So, suffice it to say, that when characters who survived the Trojan War started dying in this film, I was not exactly happy. Consequently, the truth is that the less you know about the Trojan War of classical mythology, the more you will enjoy Wolfgang Petersen’s “Troy.”

I have no problem with the idea that Homer and the other ancients have to be adapted in making a modern motion picture about the Trojan War. The decision to eliminate the gods is appropriate, getting away from the idea that this was a ten year war makes sense, and if the alliance of the Greeks is now political rather than as part of an oath sworn by the princes who were suitors for Helen’s hand, I consider that to be legitimate. I do not understand why Iphigenia, Cassandra, and Hecuba are all eliminated but there are not fatal omissions. But when you start rewriting who gets killed that is going a bit too far, especially when one premature death starts a chain effect that means Athens will never develop the jury system, which means we probably lose out on it too. David Benioff’s screenplay was “inspired” by Homer’s “Iliad,” which at least is an honest way to characterize what he did in this script, but I still do not have to like it or endorse it.

The big selling point for this film was not Homer but rather Brad Pitt as Achilles. Stories abound about how Pitt worked six months to get in shape for this film, gave up smoking, and ended up hurting his Achilles tendon in one of those profound ironies that indicates that maybe the gods were not pleased with what was happening in this film. Pitt certainly looks good, not just in terms of taking several opportunities to display the line of his nude body, but in how he carries himself as Achilles. The whole idea is that this guy is the greatest warrior on the face of the planet and Pitt exudes that with the way he strides across the sands of Troy. Even more impressive is the choreography for the fights, because Pitt’s movements are so smooth and powerful, especially compared with that of Eric Bana’s Hector, that you do not doubt that this guy is in a league by himself as a warrior. I also like the way he uses the distinctive form of his shield when fighting. They thought this part out quite a bit.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Troy! Click Here

The fight choreography was worked out by Simon Crane, the film’s stunt coordinator and second unit director, who describes Achilles as fighting with a boxing style but with the velocity of a speed skater and the agility of a panther. They also come up with a nice touch in that Achilles looks slightly to the side at his opponent until he is ready to come in for the kill. The best fight sequences of “Troy” are when Achilles is fighting. The giant battle sequences of computerized soldiers are not as impressive, mainly because the camera is always in motion and the cutting is so fast that we are left with an impression of the battle rather than always being able to tell what is going on (which has become my constant complaint with most movies with large battle sequences).

Bana does a good job of capturing Hector’s nobility without turning him into a marble statue, while Peter O’Toole fills the role of Priam naturally. On the Trojan side the problematic character is Paris (Orlando Bloom), again because of the writing more than the performance. Priam has negotiated peace between Troy and the Sparta of King Menelaus (Brendan Gleeson), but that is destroyed when Paris persuades Helen (Diane Kruger) to run away with him. Both Hector and Priam know that Paris is wrong and their reasons for supporting him and thereby dooming Troy ring hollow (the less than stellar “Helen of Troy” television miniseries did a nice job of providing a solid motivation for the Trojans to protect Helen).

It you want to draw a clear distinction between Homer’s story of Achilles and that of Benioff it is that the former is about the rage of Achilles (see the first line of the “Iliad”) and the latter adds an equally strong love element. The one character whose role is most inflated in this version is that of Briseis (Rose Byrne), the Trojan slave girl who comes between Achilles and Agamemnon (Brian Cox), the king of kings for the Greeks. This change becomes the reasoning behind how the film rewrites the end game of the Trojan War, although I still do not understand why some of the key characters get to live happily ever after. But since Pitt’s performance dominates the film and he is clearly the horse that director Wolfgang Petersen is riding to make the whole thing work, it makes sense that he has to be around until the very end.

The good news is that when I teach mythology after this DVD comes out my students will probably enjoy attacking Benioff’s changes in the original stories of Greek mythology in their papers. I think this will definitely help them understand why the writings of Homer and the other ancients are considered classics.

Features 2 new extras: “Troy In Focus” a 23 minute interview and a new 5 minute introduction by Wolfgang Peterson. Most of the other special features have been ported over from the previous edition.

First the most important question is whether or not this double dip is worth it? Absolutely because the additional footage only enhances the film giving it additional depth. The transfer is striking (regardless of which format)as well. In many respects this isn’t a double dip because we get a film that is superior to the original version.

Unlike “The Illiad” Wolfgang Petersen’s film “Troy” seemed too short and for good reason; Petersen had to trim the film down to a shorter length for its theatrical release. Luckily Warner gave Petersen the opportunity to revisit this epic film and add more meat to the bones of a film that had the look of an epic but was missing much of the emotional depth.

Petersen restores roughly 32 minutes to the film giving additional depth to the various relationships in the film. While “Troy” isn’t a perfect epic, it’s much improved. James Horner’s score is still occasionally obtrusive but the overall impact of Petersen’s film with its marvelous performances from Brian Cox (who steals almost every scene he’s in), the quiet power of Eric Bana and even the gravity of Pitt as Achilles is far more effective than the previous version.

Image quality is superb for both the DVD and Blu Ray verisons of the film (the Blu Ray, of course, gets the nod because the images are much sharper, crisper with better definition but the DVD isn’t too shabby either). Audio for the Blu Ray is presented lossless while the DVD’s audio sounds terrific given the limitations of the format. Colors are a bit bolder here than on the previous version to my eyes.

It appears that a lot of the special features from the previous edition have been ported over and the only new things are the introduction by Petersen as well as a retrospective 23 minute interview where Petersen discusses the genesis of the original film and this project.

This film version much more closely resembles what he had in mind when he took on the project. Greek mythology purists will find some of the changes disturbing but some of the changes enhance the film pulling the strands of the story together a little tighter.

Customer Reviews:

Nice, sharp, and clean.5
I was surprised at the heft of this tele converter when it arrived. It comes in a pullstring pouch that offers reasonable protection in a camera bag, purse, or other similar carying case and will hold the lens while attached to the required adapter. It also comes with a lens cap for each end. The converter has a high quality look and feel throughout, and as with the lens hood included in the inexpensive adapter kit (required), the mounting threads are cut accurately enough that the lettering on the lens and hood all line up perfectly at the top of the assembly. It looks as I would expect from Canon, which is to say, instrument quality.

OK, looks don’t make good pictures, so here is the rest of the story. The body is made of tough, lightweight materials (FRP?, polycarbonate?), so what you feel when you take the lens out of the case is the weight of several glass elements. The glass coating is well done, as pictures are nice and contrasty. Flare and distortion are minimal, and on par with a quality SLR offering. The base lens on the S2 is fairly fast, and doesn’t suffer from defects at maximum telephoto, so this converter was built to complement that quality, and it does a fine job. As a matter of fact, the converter lens is optimized to supplement only the telephoto portion of the main camera lens range, At less than moderate telephoto settings, you end up with a view of the back end of the converter lens, and not much else.

Used as intended, it gives you the ability to use your 5 mp sensor to take spectacular 650 mm telephoto shots with incredible sharpness, color, and detail. There is no comparison to digital zoom at all. This lens alows you to “reach out and touch someone” while using every pixel your sensor has available, and without adding eyeball noticable distortion at all. On top of that, the image stabilizer in the camera lets you shoot 650 mm telephoto pictures handheld in reasonable lighting conditions. Check out the price of a 600 mm image stabilized lens for an SLR and get back to me after you recover. Sure, having a $5,000 SLR body/lens combo will win the comparison at a lab bench, and might be a stop faster (only on the high end though), but the S2/teleconverter combo lets you take far better and more creative pics than the classic 35 mm with a mirror tele lens can ever offer. Further cropping the photos on your computer later will simply amaze you. For the price, it’s a must have item. It also catches the action on the field in movie mode from the nosebleed seats at the stadium.

It is a big lens, and will make your S2 look as though it must be an SLR, but the combination of S2 and teleconverter is light enough (compared to an SLR) to carry all day long in a desert without a problem. It offers the digicam prosumer quality glass reach that used to be reserved for higher end SLR’s. For what it adds to your photographic range, it’s cheap, too.

One suggestion. The lens adapter/lens hood combo you need to mount any of the three converter lenses Canon offers is dirt cheap. The combo sells for around 26 bucks everywhere. The adapter attaches to the camera with a push button release bayonet mount, is quick to change, and feels very secure. The adapter also takes 58 mm filters of all kinds, and I like to keep a UV filter mounted on my camera for the improvement in contrast it offers, and to protect the camera lens from damage (I dropped my S2 this past weekend, and the Hoya UV filter took the fall. It dented, but didn’t break). Anyway, because they are so cheap, I suggest getting one for the S2, and each converter lens you buy. That way, you can switch lenses in an instant, and keep the front of each lens protected with it’s own UV filter and/or hood. Oh yes. A good circular polorizer filter really kills glare, and brings out contrast with any lens under many typical shooting conditions. The tele-converter lens does not have front threads to mount filters (most don’t), but I made an adapter by mounting a 72 mm UV filter to a 7/16″ long cardboard masking tape core with an inside diamerter that slipped snugly over the end of the tele-converter. Prior to gluing the UV filter to the tube section, I painted the tube flat black. Now, the circular polorizer (or any other 72 mm filter attaches to the adapter, looks like it belongs there, and works perfectly.

I think you will enjoy this converter as much as I do. Good shooting.

Very nice…..4
Jim K. made a great review…..I just wanted to let you know that I agree. This is great. It is very light weight. The only reason why I gave it 4 stars is that you need to zoom a bit or else you get a burnout effect (a circle where the corners are dark because it is getting the inside of the lens). That is annoying, and forces you to remove the extender when you want to take closer photos. At a distance though, it is great. Pictures come out great. I highly recommend this…..I would have given it 4.5 stars if it were an option.

Affordable Solution, But Read On…3
I like the lens, and, in point of fact, ordered other accessories for my S2 IS as well. The Tele Converter Lens really does work well, with nominal edge-distortion. Upon first glance it makes it a great buy (at ~$100); however, you’re still stuck with a cheap-feeling plastic-threaded adapter and a lense cap that falls off. Also of note, by the time you buy a UV filter and a polarizing filter (perhaps even a flourescent light filter), you wind up spending well over $150. For about $50 more, I really wish I would have taken Lensmate’s advice.

[LENSMATE said]:

We would recommend our 52mm S2 Lensmate adapter along with a 52mm UV filter and a 52mm clip in style lens cap (note that the cap that came with your camera will not fit the adapter, and as you say falls off all the time) This is the combination most of our customers leave on their cameras all the time.

The most basic
1 52mm S3 52mm Lensmate adapter 22.95
1 52mm UV HMC filter 17.95
1 52mm lens cap 4.95

Excellent addition
1 52mm linear polarizer 17.95
( this is great to use in bright sunlight to deepen blue skies or water) you would want to remove the UV filter first as you want the least amount of glass between the subject and the built in lens on the camera)

Teleconverter
1 Raynox 1540 52mm tele 134.95 (this lens comes with both a front and back cap, and storage pouch)

This total is closer to $200.00, so you may have to buy some now and some later.

The reason to watch this movie is the reunion for those of us who remember the protagonists from the era of blaxploitation films in which we were introduced to them/ Fred Williamson, Jim Brown, Pam Grier, reconvene to take back their home town of Gary, Indiana from several well organized and terribly violent street gangs.

Also appearing in almost cameo roles are Ron O’Neal (“Superfly”) and Richard Roundtree (the original John Shaft). Seeing them all together is a treat, but left me wondering why this quintet did not get more screen time all together. It is particularly pleasing to see Brown and Grier, who, as one of the expert reviewers noted, have aged very very well. However, the re-ignition of their former relationship is tepid and seemingly forced. By contrast, it has nowhere near the intensity seen when barely restrained Brown confronts a gang leader about the murder of his son.

I agree that the simplistic plot and the consistent (and predictable) violence keep this from being one of the great films of our time. Those who remember the first time seeing these individuals in character now some thirty years ago will enjoy seeing them all together again, and that makes this disc worthwhile.

What a collection of stars you’ll never see again! Superfly, Foxy Brown, Black Caesar, football star Jim Brown and Shaft. It’s the Superfriends of Blaxploitation films! Yes, it’s violent and the plot is basic. Don’t expect to be intellectully stimulated, however this film will entertain you. The action is great and so are the one liners! This is a must see for any fan of the genre. Don’t know what to rent tonight? Rent ORIGINAL GANGSTAS!

Let’s see – take a whiskey drummer, add a boozy doctor (served in the Union Army,) a snaky gambler (Confederate vet played by John Carradine,) a good girl (haughty young wife of a horse soldier posted out west with the 6th Cavalry,) and an obnoxious and imperious businessman with a secret to hide. Made in 1939, the Year of the Motion Picture, John Ford’s STAGECOACH is pretty much everything you want or need in a western. Nominated for a slew of Academy Awards, it took one home when Thomas Mitchell won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor as the shrewd, whiskey-loving physician. In 1995 it was placed on the National Film Registry by the National Film Preservation Board.

Well, this is the first film Ford shot in Monument Valley, and it looks great. It’s also one of the first big-movie breaks for Wayne. Check out the first Wayne shot – the camera eagerly rushes up to him and holds him in a wide-eyed close-up for a couple of seconds. An entrance worthy of an icon, even if Ford was a couple of decades premature. And the always reliable, underrated Claire Trevor looks great as… well, I’m not quite sure what she is, though she dresses well and the respectable folks drive her away when they can, shun her when they can’t. In fact, the only thing that doesn’t look all that marvelous on the Warners’ 1997-released dvd is the print itself, which is scratchy in some spots and muddy and murky in others. Not terribly so, but c’mon, Warner Brothers. You’ll throw scrubbers, cleaners, and polishers and a host of long-winded commentators at suspect crime thrillers if they have `Film Noir’ stamped on the front cover. How’s about throwing some love and attention to an undisputed classic? As long as this one remains the only one available I strongly recommend it, although it truly deserves a full-scale restoration.

This review refers to “Stagecoach”, Warner Bros DVD Edition(released 1997)..

“Stagecoach”, one of The Duke’s finest westerns, is a definitive look at the American Western we have come to love. Made in 1939, Wayne in his early years as a rising star, gives as a glimpse of his extraordinary on screen presence yet to come. The film includes other wonderful stars of the era, masterful direction by John Ford, magnifcent cinematography, and a captivating storyline. It is a real cinematic treat.

Wayne is a wanted man who is along for the ride with a group of passengers, each not only battling their own demons and prejudices, but the elements of the rugged terrain and Indian attacks as well. And what a group…it also stars Claire Trevor, Andy Devine, John Carradine, Thomas Mitchell, and Donald Meek. The journey that Ford takes us on is magnificent in the stunning black and white cinematography that captures all the rugged terrain of the old west.

The DVD transfer of this 65 year old film is not as pristeen as some other B/W classic of the era, but certainly looks good. a few scratches here and there, a little flickering, but once you are involved with this film, you won’t even notice. The Dolby Dig sound is very good, all the sounds of the old west clear and distinct. The DVD includes some production notes, seven trailers, and has subtitles in English, French and Spanish.

If You are a die-hard Wayne or Ford fan, or great Westerns in general, you may want to purchase the “John Wayne Collection” which includes this one along with another Ford favorite, “The Searchers” and one of Wayne’s later Westerns, the touching story of “The Cowboys”.

Saddle up for some great Western adventure with John Wayne, and a wonderful journey from John Ford.

Happy Trails……Laurie

What is a good cop? One who joined the police force because he was unable to save his mother from being killed by an abusive husband, but who now uses violence not only against wife-beaters but whenever called for by his superior officers; be it to beat a confession out of a suspect

or to discourage criminals from settling in town? Or one who joined the police force to emulate his father, a department legend; to go after “Rollo Tommasi” (the guy who thinks he can get away with anything), but who thereafter lets his career and department politics dictate his actions? Or, in the end, is it the one who has let corruption wipe out so thoroughly the reasons why he once joined the police force that he doesn’t even remember a single one of them, but who for once in his life still finds it in himself to go after real criminals, even at the risk of his own life? This is just one, although maybe the central question asked in “L.A. Confidential,” the movie based on James Ellroy’s novel with the same name. And as does the book, the movie refuses to provide an answer to this and the other questions it asks.

The story is set up by tabloid editor Sid Hudgens (Danny DeVito), who during the movie’s opening credits gleefully sums up the L.A. clichés that still hold true today: “Come to Los Angeles! The sun shines bright, the beaches are wide and inviting, … there are jobs aplenty, and land is cheap. Every working man can have his own house, and inside the house a happy, all American family. You can have all this, and who knows, you can even be discovered – become a movie star or at least, singer. Life is good in Los Angeles: it’s paradise on earth.” Laughing sarcastically, however, he adds: “That’s what they tell ya’, anyway, ’cause they’re selling an image. They’re selling it through movies, radio, and television.” Then Hudgens proceeds to tell the story of crime boss Mickey C.’s arrest, which left the void in the City of Angels’s organized crime scene that sets the stage for this movie’s story, and concludes with his tabloid’s tag line: “Remember, dear readers, you heard it here first: Off the record, on the QT, and very hush-hush …”

Buy,Download, Or Stream L.A. Confidential! Click Here

And as indicated in these opening lines, nothing is as it seems in this 1950s’ version of a Los Angeles populated by hookers cut to look like movie stars and cops with more or less disreputable alternative sources of income. As the story progresses, its three heroes – career-driven and pseudo-correct Ed Exley (Guy Pearce), tough-fisted and golden-hearted Wendell “Bud” White (Russell Crowe) and nonchalant, corrupt “celebrity crime stopper” Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey) – become unlikely allies in their search for their city’s most elusive commodity: the truth. Shades of gray abound, and even the end, which (unlike the novel’s) has at least some redeeming aspects, is not a happy ending by a long shot.

Just as many people longingly remembered the days of “The Maltese Falcon,” “The Big Sleep” or, for that matter, “Chinatown,” proclaimed “they don’t make ‘em like that anymore” and were ready to announce the death of the noir genre, along came a group of new directors and screenwriters and breathed new life into patient. “The Usual Suspects” is one excellent example, this one is another. Unlike other noir stories’, this tale’s heroes are no private detectives; but all the classic elements of a film noir are there, from a damsel in distress (Veronica Lake-look-alike hooker Lynn Bracken, award-winningly portrayed by Kim Basinger) to crime, corruption and abuse of power, and to dimmed lights and hard boiled dialogue with many memorable one-liners. In a year overshadowed by the success of the vastly overrated “Titanic,” “L.A. Confidential” managed to at least collect the Academy Awards in the best supporting actress and best adapted screenplay categories (Kim Basinger and Brian Helgeland/Curtis Hanson, respectively; the movie had also been nominated in the best picture, best director – again Curtis Hanson -, best original score – Jerry Goldsmith -, best cinematography, best art direction and best editing categories). And while the 1990s have seen a revival of the noir genre, this one is a standout even among the new films noirs the past decade has brought us. It made the careers of its writers, director and two of its stars (Guy Pearce and Russell Crowe), and boosted those of several others of its cast members (Kim Basinger and Kevin Spacey, to name just two). I am sure it will find its eternal place in the annals of Hollywood, alongside its famous predecessors. There are way too few movies like this these days – if you haven’t seen it already, go and buy or rent it soon. This is modern noir at its finest.

“LA Confidential” takes detective film noir in a different direction-something I didn’t think could be done. Director Curtis Hanson stated that he wanted the focus of this period piece to be on the characters and dialogue rather than the locations, clothing, cars, etc. I think he got it right for the most part, but the cinematography is so spectacular that you can’t help but notice the backdrops against which the scenes are set.

The acting performances in this picture are for the most part first rate: Guy Pearce plays the ambitious Edmund Exley to perfection, Russell Crowe is superb as tough guy detective Bud White, and Kevin Spacey (one of my favorite actors of all time) turns in a stellar performance as the hip narco detective who also acts as a consultant on a Dragnet-like TV series. Strong performances by James Cromwell, Ron Rifkin, and the ubiquitous David Strathairn round out the picture. Although I liked Kim Basinger, I thought she was cast more for her look than for her acting skills. She played the role of a Veronica-lake lookalike prostitute quite well, but hers didn’t look like a performance any other competent actress couldn’t have pulled off.

The DVD version of this picture is more full of features than any other title I’ve owned thus far. It includes a documentary about the making of the film which includes cast interviews and clips of Crowe’s and Pearce’s screen tests. There’s also a location map that tells the viewer about each of the major locations where scenes were shot, cast bios, a promo for the soundtrack (featuring some very good early 50’s jazz courtesy of Chet Baker and other artists of the era), and the movie can be played with just the soundtrack running. Be warned-the features that come in the DVD version take more time to watch as the movie. But it’s well worth the time! “LA Confidential” sets a high standard in terms of what studios should include in DVD’s of their pictures. Are you paying attention, Hollywood?

WR: Mysteries of the Organism may be the quintessential Makavejev movie according to the movie scholars, but I prefer these three movies instead. They are sad, funny, rude and bittersweet like the life itself. According to Dave Kehr “these movies are like ghostly dispatches from a long vanished country”. I could not agree more. Buy this box set, for the price it is the bargain of the year.

Customer Reviews:

When 12 feet is more like 4 feet4
If you buy this product, remember that the cord is COILED so the usable length is about 1/3 of what the descriptive length is, i.e. 12 feet of length equates to 4 feet of cord. If I had it to do over, I’d buy the 15 footer. Quality of the cord is excellent.

No knots no kinks no problem!5
I purchased this phone cord up to use on my work phone. I have a Cisco phone at the office and the original cord was ridiculous! In a matter of days the old cord was knotted and twisted and pretty useless. I’d pick up the handset and the whole phone would come up with it!

I put this phone cord on at the beginning of the week and while a week might not seem long it’s obvious this cord is NOT going to KNOT! Whoot! It’s not stiff and not light weight so it doesn’t twist or hang on it’s self when you use it. It was exactly what I needed.

No Kinks Cord5
This cord is on a receptionist’s desk in a medical office. It feels and looks very durable. It gets a lot of stretching and a lot of phone calls, in bound and out. We’ve only had it a month but it still looks like brand new. I’m pleased.

This is the most charmless adaptation of S&S on the market. The dialogue is woeful, the costuming and hairstyling are laughably inaccurate, and the acting equals the very finest balsa wood. Even for the 1970s, this is garbage. Only Patricia Routledge turns in a performance that has any merit. Obviously made before anyone at the BBC twigged that the trick with Jane Austen is to use as many of her own words as humanly possible. Worth buying for curiosity value as a relic of the era when TV dramas looked like your local suburban amateur theatre production. No stars.

This 1971 production is the first of the BBC’s 3 adaptations of Sense & Sensibilty and as far as I am aware is presented here on DVD for the first time. It’s a passable effort, the casting could be better and it has a somewhat stagey feel, but overall is alright but not outstanding. It runs for about 3 hours, the video and sound quality are excellent and it has subtitles. It’s presentation on DVD is marred by advertising and the failure to edit out the inter-episode credits. Probably only for Jane Austen die-hards. Now, what about the 1967 version of Pride & Prejudice (with Celia Bannerman and Lewis Fiander)?
